Tough guys know their flowers.
Men and flower power? Might be an unlikely combo, but if you just take a trip to your friendly flower shop in the city, you’d be amazed at the guys who certainly know their flower delivery. We’re talking macho-looking guys, biceps and strong manly hands and fierce gaze which all disappear in an instant the moment they guide you on a tour to flower shops, pointing and naming this and that seemingly obscure flower.
Yes, naming flowers to send. And they really know what they’re talking about. Indeed, there is something charming when guys talk words like “first inning” or “stock portfolio” or “dialectical materialism”. But when they suddenly go rattling off words like carnations, gardenia, mums, phlox, nasturtiums, freesia, and lots of other flowers you can send to loved ones, now that’s something! And yeah, it can be a little intimidating, but definitely impressive.
Men and flowers. Nothing wrong with getting in touch with your femininity. And it seems this is the trend in most flower shop delivery nowadays: the flower delivery guys who knock at your doorstep are getting more handsome than ever, as if to complete the whole package.
And it makes sense. After all, the retail business is built around the whole concept of good image. Restaurant, hotels, banks, malls, and many other establishments depend on the fortunately good-looking people of this world to endorse and deploy their products. Nothing surprising anymore about seeing godly flawless waiters with the most disarming smile serving you your risotto and glass of champagne. And a flower delivery is no exception of course.
Your loved one wakes up in the morning to the sound of the doorbell, and opens the door to find the most handsome flower delivery there, brought by an equally gorgeous courier. It’s a two deal in one. How sweet. It’s almost enough to make you, the sender of the flowers a little jealous and insecure and wish you sent the flowers yourself. But nothing to worry about since flower delivery guys know they’re there just to work, they’re just there to send flowers and nothing more. So fret not, your gift delivery is in good hands.
If there’s anything to be intimidated about, it’s the fact that you still don’t know your flowers. Sure you know your roses and sunflowers, and orchids, but they’re not just the only flowers to send in the world. Flip through a good colored-photo book about flowers. Take a trip to your flower shop, and get to know some real flowers. You’ll be amazed at what else you didn’t know about the rich world of flowers and the art of flower delivery.
For all the men out there, nothing to be shy about sending flowers to your loved ones wherever you are may be. But don’t just send flowers like you’re sending a stuffed teddy either. The extra effort in thinking just what flowers to send your mom, or wife, or girlfriend or sister, or even your boss or brother, makes all the difference.
Again, tough guys know their flowers.

Mother’s Day has been with us for centuries, ever since the ancient Greeks held annual celebrations in honour of Rhea, mother of the gods. Now it has become one of the most favourite days of the year. Celebrating Mother’s Day has also become intertwined with thoughts of cards, candy, and of course, flowers. These are probably the most popular gift ideas for Mother’s Day. But there are also several other ways to spoil your mother; to make her feel special and loved and appreciated. Let me tell you about some of them.
First of all, Mother’s Day is not so much about showering your mom with gifts as it is showering her with love. So it doesn’t matter much you spent on the gifts – as long as your mom feels your love and affection that comes with every item you give her, that’s the most important thing.
If I may do so, let me suggest starting this special day by giving her a surprise treat, even before she gets out of bed! Wake up early in the morning and cook up a delicious breakfast just for her. All the things that she loves to eat and drink early in the morning, whether it is toast, eggs, bacon, tea, coffee, milk, or fruit juices. Load it up on a tray and deliver it straight to her for a nice breakfast in bed. There’s not a single mom in the world who wouldn’t be thrilled to be brought breakfast in bed by her child, whether 4 or 40 years old!
Do be careful with the noise you’re making in the kitchen, though. I’ve heard that one of the rare luxuries for moms today is to be able to sleep-in late, especially during a Sunday morning, so you have to time it just right. You don’t want to deliver breakfast to an irritable mom in bed, do you? If you’re afraid of messing up in the kitchen, you can always order a special gift basket loaded with goodies that your mom will surely love, from cheese to chocolates and everything in between. And oh, regarding the kitchen, don’t even think of letting her do the dishes!
And while we’re talking about Mother’s Day surprises, why not leave a fresh bouquet of flowers on her bedside table, for her to look at and greet her with a lovely burst of colour when she wakes up? It beats just going up to her and handing her a bunch of flowers, that’s for sure. Of course, it wouldn’t be right without a card. And when it comes to cards, a handmade card always means more than something you just bought from a store. So go out and grab some art supplies, and let your creativity – and hopefully, your talent – flow.
Now that we’ve started her day right, it’s time to turn it up a notch or two. Take your mother out for some pampering. It can be a relaxing picnic, a hearty lunch, or even a gorgeous dinner at her favourite restaurant. Better yet, take her to dinner somewhere that she’s always been dreaming of going to. It’s going to be a part of her special memories, you can be sure of that. But don’t stop there. Treat her to a relaxing massage or a day at the spa. There are lots of holistic treatments like shiatsu, reiki, reflexology and aromatherapy to make your mom feel on top of the world. Again, if you don’t have the budget to splurge on these, worry not. You can always get a pack of aromatherapy oils for her, plus several other pampering kits that will make your mom feel like a queen.

It doesn’t take much to make mom feel special on her day! Maybe breakfast, maybe flowers, the choice is yours. If you give mom a special breakfast, be sure you don’t spill the beans ahead of time. Most times moms want to be there watching who is messing up her kitchen.
A good idea for mom for Mothers Day is make her breakfast and serve her in bed. If you choose to serve mom breakfast you may want to plan ahead. If you plan on flowers, make sure you order them early so that they arrive a day before.
If you plan on having mom over for a wonderful dinner you plan to cook, tell her that you want to surprise her, not to make any plans for that evening. If she has made plans ask her if you can do it the next night or the night before. Don’t tell her what you are doing, just ask her to dinner.
A few decorations for mom, you can get a few balloons that are filled with helium and decorate her chair with them. Instead of giving big gifts, it’s the little thanks that are more appreciated. Have the grandkids make her a card, by hand. This too is a tear jerker! Moms love hand made items. They appreciate the time it took to make such things.
After dinner, make her a special cupcake dessert. By having cupcakes, there is not too much of a mess, no extras! Have the kids decorate the cupcakes but have one set aside that they all do together, this is her special one! For this moms will appreciate their day and feel special.

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching and one of the most popular gifts to get mom or a special woman in your life is flowers. While breakfast in bed may be just what mom needs, nothing says “I love you” like fresh flowers.
Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday each year in May and originated in Greece. Yes, Greece. In ancient times, legend has it each spring many people celebrated Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. This celebration eventually made its way to England, where “Mothering Sunday” marked the fourth Sunday of Lent.
In the US, Mother’s Day began as a day developed to celebrate peace in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe. Mother’s Day as we know it today began when a woman named Anna M. Jarvis’s mother passed away. After the death, Anna convinced her church to pass out carnations to honor her on the second anniversary of her death, the first official Mother’s Day. Anna chose white carnations, symbolizing her mother’s purity, love and endurance. Red carnations eventually took on a similar meaning, symbolizing a living mother.
There are many Mother’s Day FAQs that many people aren’t aware of:
• Mother’s Day is second only to Christmas and Chanukah in flower sales. Contrary to popular belief, Valentine’s Day falls behind Mother’s Day in flower-giving.
• 45% of flowers sold are fresh flowers
• 64% of women buy flowers
• 36% of men buy flowers
• 94% of purchases are bought as a gift
• 6% of purchases are bought for oneself
• Mixed flowers are the most popular in fresh-cut flowers
• Geraniums and petunias are the top flowering plants sold
• 81% of women ages 40 to 44 are mothers
• 90% of women in 1976 ages 40 to 44 were mothers
If all of this history and FAQs are inspiring you to buy flowers for a special woman in your life, let some of the best online flower services assist you. No matter whom you’re sending them to: mom, your grandmother, your elderly next-door neighbor or a co-worker, compare these and choose which you like the best. Remember, Mother’s Day isn’t just for mothers!

I want to send my mother in law flowers, but should I send them Friday or Sunday on the actual day?
One “trade secret” that surprisingly few people know about is that during Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day it’s actually best to get your flowers sent a few days in advance.
This is because of simple supply-and-demand–there is only a limited supply of flowers during this period grown by all the flower farms in South America, Europe, and the US, and they go very quickly.
This is also why prices for roses go up prior to Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day–it’s not “price gouging” as many people think…it’s really to try to slow down the demand so flower companies can fulfill as many orders as possible.
Personally, what I like to do is get flowers delivered to *me* a couple days in advance. I clean them, prepare the vase and the flower food, and arrange them myself, and then hand-deliver them myself on the holiday (see the link below, which provides some good advice). This way, I’m assured of having the best quality flowers, and I’m not competing with thousands of others trying to compete for the last wilting rose on Sunday itself.
If you order florist flowers, I’d recommend getting them delivered on a Friday. If you order flowers delivered by UPS or Fedex, I’d suggest getting them up to 7 days in advance–this is because those flowers often come in bud form, and are hardly presentable–you need to cut them and arrange them in warm water for them to open up.
Bottom line–in general, the earlier you order the flowers, the more likely you’ll get the highest quality ones, whether from a local florist or from a company that delivers flowers in a box.

Your Mom is probably the most important person in your life. She once gave you an irreplaceable gift – a safe, comfortable place to grow and develop before you entered this big world. She is always there for you when you need moral support or advice. She worries about you when you are away on a long trip or in the midst of a financial crisis.
Mother’s Day is HER day – once a year when you try to show her how much you love her. The only problem is finding just the right gift. Every year you rack your brains for something special, something unforgettable.
How about a bed and breakfast getaway?
Bed and breakfast inns offer a degree of personalized service that you won’t find in any hotel. Small inns often provide one-on-one amenities that will make Mom feel like a queen. Spa and in-room massage, pedicures, facials, breakfast in bed, full-meal service, fresh-cut flowers, mints on the pillow, champagne, fine wine, or strawberries dipped in chocolate are just a few of the extras you may find at one of these unique lodging properties.
Some bed and breakfasts offer special Mother’s Day packages. They excel in putting together amenities for anniversaries, birthdays, honeymoons, and other family occasions.
As you search for a bed and breakfast or country inn, try to find one that caters to adults only. Your Mom worked hard to raise you – getting up at night to comfort you when you cried, wiping your nose, cleaning your muddy face, and driving you to extracurricular functions. She has earned a holiday away from the distractions of little kids.
Here are a few suggestions to get you started.
Flagler Beach, Florida is home to Island Cottage Oceanfront Villa Inn and Spa. As its name suggests, onsite spa services are available – as well as whirlpool tubs built for two. Mom will enjoy their quiet, private beach as she relaxes and unwinds. The Inn also offers fine dining.
The Hexagon House in Pentwater, Michigan provides historic lodging near the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. This historic inn specializes in romance getaways. Mom will enjoy the Victorian parlor with its inviting fireplace, large porches, and gourmet breakfasts. In-room massage is also offered – and The Hexagon provides additional services such as manicures, facials, and personalized packages.
An Illinois inn in the greater St. Louis, Missouri area provides salon and in-room spa treatments, comfy plush robes (yours to take with you at checkout) and concierge services. The Beall Mansion’s crystal chandeliers and period antiques will make Mom feel like the Queen of England.
Charlottesville, Virginia is home to the Foxfield Inn. The Inn’s ‘Relaxation Getaway’ is meant to soak away all one’s cares. It includes full country breakfast, fine Virginia wine, and a heated outdoor spa. They can help you to reserve tables at a local restaurant, and can even transport you there – in the Inn’s Mercedes! Mom will be delighted to hear that they also offer private in-room massage.
On the southern coast of Maine you will find York Harbor – and York Harbor Inn. Boasting beautiful ocean views, fireplaces, patios, decks, and whirlpool spa tubs, this Inn is sure to please. Their fine gourmet dining and onsite pub with entertainment make any stay more complete. For mothers who like golfing, there is a golf course nearby. If Mom just wants to stroll while she unwinds, she can wander along miles of sandy beaches.
Now that you have a few suggestions, you can begin your Internet quest. However, if you are looking for accommodations in another country, you may need to expand your search criteria to include ‘pensions’, ‘guesthouses’, and ‘homestays’.
No matter what you call them, bed and breakfast inns are unique, and they aim to please.

I am organizing a Mother’s Day bulb sale as a fundraiser and am wondering what types of flowers (bulbs or seeds) are generally planted around that time; I would like to sell season appropriate flowers. This is in mid-New Hampshire if that affects anything. Any suggestions appreciated!
As far as bulbs….most of the spring blooming bulbs like tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and crocus all needed to be planted in fall. You could still sell them but if you want to sell bulbs to be planted now you will have to go with more summer blooming bulbs.
Gladioli, cannas, ranunculas, liatris, crocosmia, calla lillies, asiatic lily bulbs, caladiums, or dahlias all could be sold for summer.
One thing great about the timing of Mother’s Day you could sell almost any kind of annual flowers.
Pansies or violas, alyssum, salvia, verbena, snapdragons, mini gem marigolds, impatiens, …of course….petunias, lobelia, even ornamental grasses…no end to the possibilities to what you could sell .
Good luck!

What are your thoughts as Mother’s Day is fast approaching? Are you wondering how best to show your feelings for your mother on Mother’s Day? What is the perfect gift that can convey your genuine love and care for your mother without giving hints of flattery or appeasement?
You might get overwhelmed by the variety of Mother’s Day gifts that are available in the market. If you are like many others, you would want to gift her with flowers, especially if she is someone who loves flowers. Because of the traditional associations made, the first flower that comes to mind might be carnations! The association between Mother’s Day and Carnations is very strongly embedded in our minds. There is even an early Christian legend according to which carnations are the flowers that sprung up when the tears of the mother of Christ fell on the ground as she saw the sufferings of her son.
Flowers are very popular on Mother’s Day and they are almost indispensable as gifts on the occasion. You could easily get carnations, hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils for her.
OK, if not carnations or any of the other three mentioned above, you could give other flowers like roses and orchids. Or a mix of carnations, orchids, and roses. Are you happy with these? Or do you, like me, feel that these flowers do not make such great gifts because they removed from their natural surroundings?
Without completely discarding traditional notions, consider this question with an open mind: ‘are carnations the best plant and flower related gift you could give your mother?’ In other words, can you give something that is fuller and more organic than mere flowers?
That is where my suggestion gets its relevance. Gift your mother with flowering plants. They are better than mere flowers because of many reasons. They are alive, inspiring, and ecologically more meaningful. Moreover, they give your mother a chance to make her garden richer and more beautiful.
That being the main focus, let us start off with some other Mother’s Day gifts!
Simple and homemade gifts for mom
A very simple and telling way of showing your mother that you care is by doing everything for her on Mother’s Day. Let her relax on her most comfortable chair and read her favorite book and watch television. You could cook her favorite seafood dish or prepare her favorite dessert.
Crafts are a popular gift item for Mother’s Day. You can make them using common things such as paper by following simple instructions. Or you could write a genuine and unaffected letter for her. If you are comfortable with the medium of poetry, you could write her a poem that would delight her.
Jewelry pieces such as bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and rings can make excellent Mother’s Day gifts. In the apparel category, there are some interesting modern trends. A popular Mother’s Day gift these days is a nice T-shirt set for both the mother and the child.
Now we will move to the natural gifts category, the one that includes plants and flowers.
Plants and flowers for mom
Flowering plants being more natural and alive, they should logically make great gifts. It is surprising why they haven’t become very popular as yet.
Flowering plants are novel gift items for Mother’s Day. These are likely to be more-than-welcome gift for a mother who has been getting carnations year after year. They can be given in various types of containers. You could consider gifting them in baskets, pots, and metallic containers.
Undoubtedly, these plants are going to matter a lot to mothers who love gardening. They have the extra charm of being living things as compared to flowers, which are, although attractive, placed out of context because they are plucked out of nature.
If your mother is a lover of gardening, one of the best things you could do to her is to gift her with a pot of flowering plants. The longer the time she spends with the plants, the better she would feel about your gift and the good emotions that inspired you to give her that gift.
You could buy planted flowers from a good online florist. If you just go to their site and search for their Mother’s Day catalog, you would come across some nice planted flowers. You might even gather enough audacity to go beyond the usual carnations and buy plants.
You could get some add-ons too, such as wine, chocolates, and soft toys. Based on your mother’s likes and dislikes, you can decide whether it is appropriate or not.
